In brief
The 28 Lunar Mansions (二十八宿) are the segments of sky the Moon crosses in a month, grouped into the four celestial animals. In the almanac they also rule the days in a fixed 28-day cycle, each mansion carrying an auspicious, inauspicious or mixed nature and a domain of activities it favours.
Frequently asked
What is the ruling mansion of a day?
Each day is governed by one of the 28 mansions in a continuous 28-day cycle. That mansion's nature and domain help judge whether the day suits a wedding, a move, an opening or a burial. FengSpark reads it from the traditional almanac cycle.
Are the 28 mansions the same as the zodiac?
No. The twelve zodiac animals come from the year; the 28 mansions come from the Moon's monthly path across the sky and rule individual days. Both feed date selection, along with the 12 officers and the flying stars.
Which mansions are auspicious?
Mansions such as 房 (Room), 斗 (Dipper), 室 (Encampment), 壁 (Wall) and 張 (Extended Net) are broadly auspicious, while 心 (Heart), 危 (Rooftop) and 鬼 (Ghost) are avoided for most matters. FengSpark gives the nature of any day's mansion with its activities.
